This is a condition where there is inflammation of an open apophysis. The apophysis is a growth plate located within a developing bone. This may occur throughout the body in various locations as all bones have an area of growth. Each bone is developing at different rates and dependant on the childs age. This open growth plate is very susceptible to injury as it is a weak area due to the uncalcified bone. Typically in the foot the calcaneous (heel bone) is where a patient will complain of this type of pain. This is termed Sever’s Disease when it occurs in the back of the heel.
